Katie Hipwell is a talented artist and textiles designer based in Devon, UK. She creates timeless wallpaper, fabric designs, and murals inspired by her whimsical watercolour paintings.

For this project, I was asked to create a small logo set for Katie. Her original logo no longer reflected the nature of her work and needed an update. Katie’s painting style is free and expressive, and I wanted the new logo to combine that sense of creativity with the classic, timeless quality of her designs.

The Design Process e.g. the fun stuff!

The process began with in-depth research into Katie’s portfolio and the branding of her competitors. It was important that her new identity stood out in the marketplace while staying true to what makes her work unique. Inspiration came from classic book cover titles — hand-drawn lettering with a sense of personality and tradition.

I initially explored using my own handwriting for the logo, which Katie really loved. However, it didn’t quite feel right in the final context. From there, we explored several typefaces, working to capture the same expressive layout of my hand-drawn sketches, but with a more refined and free-flowing typographic style.
