Amber is a coffee shop situated in Bushwick, Brooklyn. They are a family run business that pride themselves on building relationships with customers and being a community hub since 1987 with a tagline of ‘Honest Coffee House. They wanted an eye-catching, authentic and bold design to appeal to their young clientele. Alongside new branding, Amber requested a coffee label design, a menu and loyalty card.

The logo has a distinctly American feel, I could easily imagine it used in a New York coffee shop. It was developed from handwritten lettering and refined in Adobe Illustrator, resulting in a bold and characterful mark. Variants of the logo use the same hand-drawn type, with the favicon featuring a close-up of the distinctive “A” from the main logo. The colour palette is bright and bold yet minimal, offering strong visual impact with simplicity.
The label design is intentionally minimal and sustainable, conceived as a simple sticker that can be applied to packaging to reduce waste and keep costs down. Typography is set in a monospaced, typewriter-style font that complements the aesthetic while ensuring legibility. The accompanying menu features the brand pattern on the reverse side, creating a striking contrast with the clean front layout. This bold design helps it stand out in a busy coffee shop environment. The menu layout mirrors the coffee bag label, with a matching border and typeface for consistency. The brand pattern nods to traditional coffee shop checkerboard floors, reimagined with a twist by incorporating fragments of the logo into the squares.
